Scalable real-time control of intersections in urban traffic networks thanks to a leader-follower coordination approach*

چکیده
This paper proposes a distributed coordination mechanism between local feedback controllers that adapt the switching times of traffic lights at neighboring intersections. Some heavily loaded intersections are designated “leader intersections”. There, a local control agent sets switching times to minimize the expected queues, knowing vehicle passing times at local upstream sensors only, and sends its intended switching plan to neighboring “follower intersections”. Each follower agent uses this information to try to minimize the waste of green capacity at the neighboring leader intersection: in addition to minimizing its local queues, it also takes into account the expected queues that their switching decisions imply for their leader. We show, in realistic simulations, how the coordination introduced by this element allows to reduce queues not only at the leaders, but also at the follower nodes. The potential and key aspects of this scalable and simple coordinated control method for other applications is briefly discussed.

Analyzing Stop Time Phase Leading to Congestion Based on Drivers’ Behavior Patterns
Traffic oscillation, stop and go traffic, is created by different reasons such as: sudden speed drop of leader vehicle. Stop and go traffic commonly is observed in congested freeways results in traffic oscillation. Many theories had been presented to define congestion traffic based on laws of physics such as: thermodynamics and fluid. But, these theories could not explain the complexity of driv...
متن کاملA neuro-fuzzy approach to vehicular traffic flow prediction for a metropolis in a developing country
Short-term prediction of traffic flow is central to alleviating congestion and controlling the negative impacts of environmental pollution resulting from vehicle emissions on both inter- and intra-urban highways. The strong need to monitor and control congestion time and costs for metropolis in developing countries has therefore motivated the current study. This paper establishes the applicatio...
متن کاملSchedule-Driven Coordination for Real-Time Traffic Network Control
Real-time optimization of the dynamic flow of vehicle traffic through a network of signalized intersections is an important practical problem. In this paper, we take a decentralized, schedule-driven coordination approach to address the challenge of achieving scalable network-wide optimization. To be locally effective, each intersection is controlled independently by an on-line scheduling agent....
متن کاملA new virtual leader-following consensus protocol to internal and string stability analysis of longitudinal platoon of vehicles with generic network topology under communication and parasitic delays
In this paper, a new virtual leader following consensus protocol is introduced to perform the internal and string stability analysis of longitudinal platoon of vehicles under generic network topology. In all previous studies on multi-agent systems with generic network topology, the control parameters are strictly dependent on eigenvalues of network matrices (adjacency or Laplacian). Since some ...
متن کاملModeling Multiple–Vehicle Property Damage Collisions in Urban Signalized Intersections
Development of disaggregate models for estimating different property damage collision type frequencies in urban intersections has rarely been studied, particularly in Iran. It seems very little research work being implemented for studying the effect factors on collision type frequency at intersections. The main objective of this paper is to develop suitable statistical models to predict types o...
